Hello,
This is my personal outlet to share my life experiences and ponderings related to womanhood, prostitution, radical feminism, and social activism. My personal journey strayed from convention on many levels, allowing me to taste freedom (and its associated costs) in a fashion reserved for those labeled as marginalized misfits. These life lessons have dramatically contorted and coloured my worldview, inevitably leading to the re-analyzation of every “fact”, ideal, standard, and claim that I, as well as most other women, previously took for granted (particularly as they relate to gender relations and economics). With more questions than answers, I am delving into feminist theory in search of a better understanding of why things are as they are.
My first real brush with feminism occurred almost a decade ago at the age of 18 while living in the Deep South. The Internet wasn’t what it is now, and useful, accurate information relating to feminism was difficult to track down. I grew frustrated and confused while wading through arguments within and among the various feminist factions and society-at-large, unable to comprehend the significance of matters such as the Second and Third Waves or the Liberalism vs. Radical debate. It all seemed so overwhelming back then, so I let it slip away and instead re-focused my energy on making a living and going to school.
With a better grasp on how our social system is set up and who benefits from it and why, I’m yearning to know more about the movement, past and present. About our options from here on out. About the politics involved. About the activists who pave the way. I need and want to know about my sisters and the realities they face.
This leg of my journey involves introspection, retrospection, healing, and personal growth; so, I lay claim to this corner of the web to share my perceptions, stories, and musings with the female collective. By writing down my thoughts, I hope to expand my self-awareness while offering up one person’s perspective of living within the confines of the label and profession known as “whore.” Prostitution isn’t discussed nearly enough in my opinion. lol
Reading the writings of others on various blogs, sites and in books (like The Gender Knot and The Politics of Reality) has helped me make sense of the delusive contradictions that have been driving me crazy and come to terms with who is benefiting from all of this. With the “re-awakening” of Radical Feminism in conjunction with growing acceptance of the limitations of Liberal Feminism, I feel we’re all heading in the right direction.
I’ll be importing comments I posted on various blogs and old writings to start this off. And likely there will be a burst of posts early on as I have a lot to say now that I’m freed up to do so. When you cater to the interests of men it’s never a good idea to publicly state how you really feel. Or, more accurately, how you’ve come to feel over time.
