30-day notice

Well, as if the week couldn’t get any better, my landlord has informed me this morning that I have until October 31, 2008, to move unless I’m willing to agree to a rent increase that goes into effect on January 1, 2009.  Why we must vacate 60 days prior to the day of the increase I’m not certain aside from him claiming to want to fix the place up.  He says he’s unable to afford the property taxes so he’s passing along the costs to us.  He can afford hundreds of plants, new sod, fresh paint on both the exterior and interior of the building, and renovations of the apartments (my dishwasher will go to the next renter apparently), but not the property taxes.  Go figure.

Wasn’t too friendly sharing the message either.  It began with yet another inquiry over the dishwasher he promised over a year ago at the time I originally signed the lease.  It still hasn’t been installed though he saw fit to bust up my kitchen cabinet months ago, leaving a gaping hole and lack of storage space.  He now says that all of this is “in the past” and that he will not be installing the dishwasher after all since now I’ll be moving.  Nice.

So…now what?  Class ends in 3.5 weeks and I have approximately 4.5 weeks to get out.  A friend gave me a phone number to a renter’s rights firm, though I doubt they’ll be of much help.  In the past when I’ve battled landlords, I’ve always lost so there doesn’t seem much hope in this prospect.  Plus, tear up the apartment as I might, I am unable to locate the goddamn rental lease.  It was here and I saw it not all that long ago.  It should be in the file box, but no, not there anymore.  Not on the printer table, the dining table, or hidden in other boxes.  Not in the desk drawers, on or around the desk, under the bookcase, or in the buffet stand.  No clue where it might be.

So, this is the new situation.  Not sure where to go from here.  Not sure if I can sell my stuff in time.  Likely the cats will have to ride along in the car since chances are they won’t find a good home in this short amount of time.  Not even trying to call family at this time.

Ah well, according to BusinessWeek, this is probably a good time to blow out of the area anyway.

The level of “pissedocity” is paramount over here at the moment as I try to figure out where to go from here.  Maybe this is life’s way of saying “shit or get off the pot.”  Gee, thank life.  Always appreciate the jumpstart, you motherfucker.

Okay…fine…time to buck up and deal with it. I’m in the process of making preparations. Still haven’t found that lease though.

I hope to locate a friend back west to see if maybe he’ll accept a roomie for some time. Either way, it’s time to leave this town. I can drive back occasionally to visit clients if need be, but otherwise, it’s just not home. This may result in traveling back down south to stay with family temporarily, assuming this is allowed. My goal now is to raise cash without rent hanging overhead in hopes of heading abroad possibly asap.
